What is a Companion Card?
The Companion Card program is an invaluable resource for people with disabilities enabling them to better participate in community activities. Designed primarily for individuals with significant and permanent disabilities, the card provides complimentary entry for an accompanying carer or support person, recognizing the essential role they play in enhancing the cardholder’s experience.
Maybe you would love to go to a sports event, the theatre, a concert or just see a movie at your local cinema but need a family member, friend, or your NDIS support worker to accompany you to safely navigate crowded spaces if you have reduced mobility, severe epilepsy or other types of disability which can make participating in these activities difficult or challenging. The card can also be used on public transport. You will still need to cover the cost of the ticket for yourself, but the Companion card will provide your carer or support person with free entry to the venue. Normally you might need to purchase a ticket for yourself plus the other person and this can become prohibitively expensive if you are on a tight budget.
Businesses Affiliated with the Companion Card Program
Not every business is affiliated with the Companion Card program, but the number of businesses is extensive, and includes all major cinema outlets, council swimming and leisure centres, major events and shows, ticket master events, Melbourne Zoo, Aquarium and Museum, Arts Centre, NGV, Luna Park, and Botanic Gardens. A comprehensive list can be accessed via the Companion Card website.
Eligibility
The card is issued to people who can demonstrate that they would not be able to participate at most venues and activities without attendant care, and that this need can be demonstrated to be lifelong. People on a NDIS Plan are not automatically eligible for a Companion Card and will need to be assessed against the Companion Card eligibility criteria. Companion Cards cannot be issued if the applicant may become independent in the future because of treatment/management, training, recovery, or developmental improvements.
To obtain a Victorian Companion card you need to meet the following eligibility criteria,
- Be a permanent resident or Australian Citizen and live in Victoria
- Demonstrate that you have a significant, permanent disability.
- Demonstrate that, due to the impact of the disability, you would be unable to participate at most community activities without attendant care support.
- Demonstrate that the need for this level of attendant care will be life-long.
